This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
