Sheff Wed Confronts Major Issues, Declares New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The team's current difficulties are seen as a "major concern" and the independent regulator is seeking powers to investigate clubs in comparable cases, its new chair the regulator has declared.

During an extensive discussion, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, voiced concern towards supporters of the Owls.

Kogan met with four fan organizations associated with the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The Championship side have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in September.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a major concern for the league and a substantial concern for English football," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the iconic names for English football and recently we have met fan representatives.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Ownership Situation

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be willing to sell up at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in earlier this year caused limitations by the English Football League (EFL) in mid-year, blocking the team from conducting any transfers or loans for the next three transfer windows, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Regulator's Perspective

The chairman stated: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where fans are dedicated to a community organization that has represented their community in many cases.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the supporters."

When asked if the authority might compel an proprietor to divest a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an specific team, an particular chairman, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you review the record of the sport, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the approach they have taken toward their clubs and ultimately refuse to accept accountability for the long-term prospects."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with delegates from multiple organizations to explain the responsibilities of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "significant participation" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate swiftly," Kogan said.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the realm of domestic football is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has been invested for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to take a really clear view on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the Premier League as a premium product of the nation. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in 2020.

The chairman provided financial support for government minister the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the regulator explained.

"I am no longer involved in any sort of politics."
