Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard courts

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

Medvedev, a former world number one, has had a torrid season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serving in particular - led to him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set win over challenger Moutet.

It is his maiden title after the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt after spring of that year.

The win also signifies he has secured twenty-one titles at twenty-one various competitions.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to win a title is particularly special," said ranked player Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his past six finals, including in that event in the past months.

The player's retrieving strategy and regular emotional displays on the tennis court had caused some to question if his skill to compete at the top level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

He came back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, winning four of the last five points to take the lead.

The pair swapped breaks in the middle set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to create a final set.

He defended 4 early chances in a close deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Fittingly, Medvedev secured the win with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to handle a volley after a lengthy match.
