Intense Winds Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to stay indoors as strong winds strike the region.

Powerful gales hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left around 90,000 homes without power and led authorities to cancel over 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are impacting the entire South Island and southern parts of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to avoid going outside, avoid travel, and get ready for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Destruction and Crisis Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the South Island, while agencies report that power was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was blown onto approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel to and from the urban area have been cancelled due to the weather, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Work Stoppages During Harsh Conditions

These intense gusts on this day occur while many of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the severe conditions has pressured them to modify various scheduled activities, with several external protests relocated inside or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced burning restrictions for fear of wildfires.
